The movie was cute, but not accurate to summer camp experience at all. My fraternal twin brother and I were forced to go to summer camp when we were 15. We didn’t have a good time, the cabins were run down and infested with bugs, mice, snakes, spiders, one cabin had a bat loose in it and another had a wasp nest. The food was bad, even by summer camp standards. The lake was dirty and unsafe for swimming until two years prior due to the chemical waste dumping that went on back in the ‘70s and ‘80s. The mattresses were filthy and never cleaned, the boats and canoes either had mice, or holes and sank as a result. The camp director, counselors, and CITs were complete a**holes to the campers. One CIT was sexually harassing me and wouldn’t stop when I told him to, and even after when my brother threatened him. My brother and I complained to the head counselor and camp director, nothing was done. After the CIT harassed me again, my brother beat up the CIT and yet he (my brother) got in trouble while the CIT got away with it (at least after the beating he left me alone). On “Parents’ Day”, our parents didn’t visit but our dad offered us train tickets home, and we accepted them. We along with other campers (1/3 of the campers in total, counting my brother and me) who were allowed to go home on Parents’ Day were taken into town and dropped off at the train station, the counselors in charge of that flipped us off as the train left the platform. Me, my brother, and the other campers who left with us were not sad to leave. My brother and I never went to another camp.

I was 10 years old in 1979 when Meatballs was released to the theaters. While it's a good, funny movie, as a kid I really couldnt connect with it because from my experience and vantage point, I saw it as a huge inaccuracy about sleepaway camp. I hated summer camp. Every summer my (abusive) mother sent me to camp against my will. One month of day camp and one month of sleepaway camp. She sent me not because it would be good for me, but just to get me out of her hair for extended lengths of time. As much as I hated my abusive, dysfunctional home, it was the hell I knew. I would have preferred to stay home on my summer break from school. Stay up as long as I liked at night, sleep as late as I wanted in the mornings. Play outside with the neighborhood kids. Hang out with my best friends. Watch TV and see what I missed due to the usual school hours, etc. At day camp and sleepaway camp, I had to put up with being picked on and bullied not only by my fellow campers, but also by the camp counselors. The campers and counselors who didn't bully me, turned a blind eye to those who did. When I wrote home about all the abuse and neglect I had to put up with, to cover up, the camp office saw to it that my postcards home didn't get mailed. Instead, they trashed them. When I got home, I discovered my mother received only 4 of my postcards when I wrote home 2-3 postcards a day, every day, for the whole month. One of the 4 postcards that made it home was a phony "having a great time, wish you was here" type of message that they forced us to write. Not to mention the mattresses they furnished us with to sleep on, were all urine stained by bedwetting campers of previous summers. In Meatballs, sleepaway camp is portrayed as a real fun, charming, and happy experience. In my experience it was anything but.

I worked as a camp counselor in 2017 and 2018 at a nice summer camp. This movie, although it was made in 1979, it's not far from the truth. You make so many memories with your fellow counselors and campers that you meet. You'll meet the occasional brat but not all the kids are bad. The counselors are fun to hang out with and there's always a Tripper that everyone wants to hang out with. Still love this movie.
